Each year,
Navy Recruiting District NY says "THANKS" to Operation Goody Bag. Not with an award, or a gift or a smile....but
with a "Cruise of a LIFETIME"! Yes, you read that right! But, not just any cruise and not out of New York
Harbor! On the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend, a select group of students and faculty drive to Norfolk, Va for an
overnight trip. Our hotel.....a United States Navy warship! To name a few of our floating "hotels",
we have sailed on the USS Iwo Jima, the USS Wasp, the USS San Antonio and the USS Monterey.
We arrive in Norfolk in
the evening and enter the gates of Norfolk Naval Base. It's a long walk down the pier to our ship, especially when we are
carrying not just our luggage but our video and computer equipment PLUS at least 2,000 Goody Bags! Once we check in
. . . it's off to our bunks. Yes, it's true, there is about 6" between the top of your nose and the top of the bunk.
That night we settle in, have dinner in the mess hall and attend our "Welcome Aboard" meeting! Monday morning we set sail for NYC along with several other Naval ships by our side. (That would be Port and
Starboard). The next days fly by with a whirlwind of events and activities as we enjoy life onboard a floating city.
Here are some photos of past trips . . .
